<\/a>Downtown San Francisco remained a bustling landscape of streetcars, neon signs, department stores, theaters, restaurants, bars, hotels, newsstands, and small specialty shops. Market Street was the city\u2019s great commercial artery, while neighborhoods such as North Beach, Chinatown, the Mission, and the Fillmore maintained their own distinctive identities. Servicemen on leave mixed with dockworkers, office employees, tourists, musicians, and newly arrived war workers, giving the city an especially lively atmosphere. The Fillmore District developed into a major center of jazz and nightlife, while North Beach\u2019s restaurants, clubs, and cafes helped establish the bohemian reputation that would blossom during the following decade.<\/p>\nThe war also exposed some of the darker realities of the era. San Francisco\u2019s Japanese American community was devastated by forced removal and incarceration beginning in 1942, leaving homes and businesses behind as families were sent to detention camps. At the same time, large numbers of African American workers migrated from the South to take wartime jobs, significantly expanding the city\u2019s Black population despite widespread discrimination in housing and employment.<\/p>\n
By the end of the decade, San Francisco was moving confidently into the postwar era. The United Nations Conference held there in 1945 helped produce the UN Charter, placing the city briefly at the center of international diplomacy. Returning veterans, expanding suburbs, new automobiles, and changing patterns of commerce were beginning to reshape everyday life, but the San Francisco of the 1940s still retained the unmistakable character of an older urban America\u2014cable cars and streetcars rattling past crowded storefronts, movie marquees glowing after dark, fog rolling between tightly packed buildings, and ships constantly moving through the bay.<\/p>\n
